ITIL (Version 5): A practitioner’s perspective on professional transition and structured transformation

Helen Clarke, Frontline Support & ITSM Practice Manager, Jade Software Corporation

Helen Clarke recently completed the ITIL Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) module and obtained the ITIL Master (Version 5) designation. Here, she outlines the new concepts she welcomes in the advanced level modules and how the transition module process makes sense for ITIL 4 and ITIL v3 practitioners updating their knowledge and credentials.

As someone who works with product and service management every day, ITIL (Version 5) does not feel like a replacement for its predecessor; rather, it feels more like a natural progression. It builds on familiar concepts while making them more practical and easier to apply in today's environments. I especially appreciate how it brings product and service thinking together and introduces a more AI-native approach.

Strengthening product and service lifecycle thinking

One of the most practical enhancements in ITIL (Version 5) is the closer integration between product and service lifecycle management. Bringing these perspectives together helps break down silos and strengthen collaboration between teams. This integration makes it easier to link operational issues back to lifecycle improvements. Rather than treating products and services separately, organizations can adopt a more connected view of how value is created and sustained.

For practitioners, this supports a more consistent approach across different functions. It also reinforces that service management applies throughout the entire lifecycle, rather than within isolated operational activities.

Shifting the focus towards experience

Another area I find particularly valuable is the increased emphasis on experience. This represents an important shift from measuring success primarily through traditional service level agreements to understanding how stakeholders perceive outcomes.

Organizations can meet every SLA target yet still deliver an experience that falls short of expectations. While customers may receive services within agreed timeframes, this does not necessarily ensure that their interactions are positive or that they feel supported throughout the process.

Making experience more explicit helps organizations connect operational performance with the outcomes that matter most to customers. This emphasizes that value is shaped not only by efficiency, but also by perception, trust and engagement.

Bringing structure to transformation

Transformation has become a constant feature of modern organizations, especially in managed services environments where business-as-usual activities continue alongside ongoing change initiatives.

This is one of the areas that stood out most to me in ITIL (Version 5). The guidance addresses a gap by presenting more structured models and patterns, rather than discussing improvement in broader terms. These patterns are particularly useful because they reduce reliance on ad hoc approaches. They also encourage organizations to move beyond reactive improvement and take a more deliberate approach to planning and governing change.

In reality, organizations are often managing business-as-usual activities while driving change at the same time. The guidance provided throughout the ITIL Transformation (Version 5) module helps organizations manage both activities in tandem, creating a more sustainable approach to change.

Equally important is the approach to governance across both business-as-usual operations and transformation initiatives. What I find most valuable here is that the guidance goes beyond theory by providing models that practitioners can use and implement. This helps organizations maintain stability while managing change more effectively.

Supporting professional transition

For ITIL v3 Experts, ITIL 4 Managing Professionals and ITIL Masters, the ITIL Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) module offers an efficient route to adopting the updated guidance.

Since it is a changes-only pathway, experienced practitioners do not need to revisit concepts they already understand. Instead, the focus is on what is new, particularly regarding product and service lifecycle thinking, experience, transformation and governance. It builds naturally on what practitioners are already familiar with while introducing new perspectives that address the challenges organizations face today.

One of the key shifts is moving beyond traditional process and service thinking towards lifecycle, experience and value thinking. At the same time, practitioners gain a better understanding of how governance and transformation are interconnected. For experienced professionals, this provides an efficient pathway to stay current without having to start again.

Beyond individual learning, ITIL (Version 5) responds to the realities organizations face as they manage increasing complexity and continuous change. Bringing together stronger lifecycle thinking, experience-driven value and structured transformation supports more consistent improvement while maintaining operational stability.

Looking ahead

What stands out most to me is the combination of stronger product lifecycle thinking, greater emphasis on experience and a more structured approach to transformation. Together, these elements show how ITIL continues to evolve while supporting both stability and adaptability. Rather than replacing established practices, it strengthens them while extending capabilities to address new challenges. To me, this feels like a logical progression. In an environment where organizations must manage both operational stability and continuous change, structured adaptability is essential.
